B-17G Flying Fortress Late Ver 1/32 by HK Models
The Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress is one of the most iconic heavy bombers from World War II, playing a key role in the defeat of Nazi Germany. Serving alongside the B-24 Liberator and B-29 Superfortress, the B-17G was a workhorse in multiple theatres of war. Its journey to history almost never came to pass, as the original prototype, Model 299, crashed in October 1935. Fortunately, the design’s immense potential was evident, leading to further prototypes and, eventually, full-scale production despite Boeing losing the original contract.
The B-17G, with its distinctive and imposing silhouette, became a symbol of American airpower during the war. The ‘Flying Fortress’ moniker, coined by a journalist due to its heavy armament, was later trademarked by Boeing. The B-17G was the culmination of several revisions, featuring a redesigned tail, longer fuselage, and improved armament for greater firepower and defense.
Among its key upgrades, the B-17G had a substantial redesign in the tail section, making it one of the most recognizable bomber profiles of the era. It also saw improvements like the introduction of the Sperry ball turret, remote-operated turrets, and the Cheyenne tail gunner position, which enhanced the bomber’s survivability and combat effectiveness.
Powered by four Wright R-1820-97 "Cyclone" turbocharged radial engines, producing 1200hp each, and equipped with 13 Browning M2 .50 caliber machine guns, the B-17G was a formidable force. It could carry 4,500 lbs of bombs over long-range missions and was manned by a crew of 10. Its wing span of 103ft 9in and length of 74ft 4in made it a formidable presence in the skies.
The B-17G Flying Fortress not only contributed to Allied victory but became a symbol of resilience, strength, and technological advancement. Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast or a history aficionado, this iconic aircraft model brings the legacy of World War II airpower to life.
